Theatre Anon benefits from new ZigPress site

Published 14 Jun 2010 in Clients, Design, Themes, WordPress by ZigPress

It’s been a while since I launched a new ZigPress client site, and I’m very happy to announce my latest creation, a new WordPress-based website for the Malta-based theatre company and foundation, Theatre Anon.

Theatre Anon stage productions on a regular basis at various Maltese venues, and needed a site that they could update themselves by adding news articles, pages, photos and videos. WordPress was the natural choice, and the end result was achieved by creating a custom theme that included several custom page templates.

I was given the required information architecture (how many pages were required, their desired content, and how they should link together), but beyond that I was given full creative control. I opted for a “segmented” design, where objects are placed separately on a background, and used shadows to emphasize the effect. Some imprint techniques (where text or images look as though they have been “stamped” into their surroundings) completed the look. Click the screenshot to take a look.

Further improvements will follow in time, but for now the company has a brand new vehicle to promote their latest production, which takes place in just over a month’s time.

Cool theme. It’s simple and not too hard on the eyes.

I hope you wouldn’t mind some constructive criticism. There seems to be a black box in the left “side bar” that doesn’t really serve any purpose. Also an imprint the same size of that black box is at the left side. I think you’ll put some content there after, but for the imprint seems distracting. I think the dark Grey background of the content area is not suitible for an arts and doesn’t complement the rest of the page. It would be nicer in a beige color compared to the rest of the site.

Really like the design of the site especially the kind of “featured” part with quotes about the show.

Anyways what about the black squary on the left? Is there something not working for me?

Thanks for sharing the theme with us!

The black background freaks me out and I know many people who hates websites with black background. I attended a usability lab where the first rule of web esign was not to use black as background. You have a great blog. Can you please change the background so that content is easily readable ?

To the people who queried the black box below the logo… the black box is actually part of the logo – so the complete logo is the text plus the box.

And regarding the dark background, the client was offered both light and dark and opted for the dark. Though unsure initially, I now feel they made the right choice.

The design was really awesome. The color contrast was brilliant. I loved the violet color effect that was looking marvelous in the dark background. It was a superb effort. Thanks for sharing this creative piece of work with us.

thats a strange logo then if its just a big box with nothing inside it. Overall I like the website. Wordpress sites do great for SEO out of the box so I trust the client will be happy with the results.

Personally I think the darkness of the background works perfectly for a theatre arts website conveying the industry well. The fact that obviously the audience sit in the dark while watching productions justifies this color scheme further as readers will find relatations with being in the theatre. I do not think a light color scheme would have looked as good.

    @David: read my earlier comment.

@Jack: I think you were referring to this site, not the site I was discussing in the article. But anyway, usability labs are just vehicles for their presenter’s opinions – there are no “rules of web design”, just common sense. Common sense tells me this site is perfectly readable for its intended audience. It has also featured in many web design showcases with favourable feedback, so I’m in no rush to change it.

I kinda agree with the commenters who didn’t like the grey background, but I also agree with you that it’s a very subjective thing. I guess the only hard-and-fast rule of good webdesign is ‘as long as it doesn’t actively make your eyes bleed’!

Design is great – clean and simple, but inverted logo makes too much white space. And is really hard to catch that this is inverted logo :)

  28. On 12 Jul 2010 at 18:08, Wallpapers said:

I agree with Maciej on the inverted logo topic, it’s kinda artificially dropped there doesn’t seem to belong there naturally, also may I suggest a slightly darker color for the navigation buttons text, the contrast between the button background color and the text color makes the text render with jagged edges on firefox.

  29. On 13 Jul 2010 at 06:44, ZigPress said:

The inverted logo is a matter of taste – the client likes it, so that’s what matters here. Not sure what version of Firefox or OS you’re on, but the nav text is perfectly smooth on mine.

This a very good theme. I like the header picture which clearly and 100% matches the niche of the theme. I think the color choice is good too. I think the black square box that “Nanny” meantioned is for advertisement purpose – for future use! The color combination really blends very nicely with the images displayed here and I have no doubt it will melt seemlessly with other theatre images. Well done.
