WordPress 2.9 Released
I woke up rather early this morning to the news that WordPress 2.9 has now passed through all its testing and release candidate cycles, and is now available.
This is great news for all WordPress developers and bloggers, because this release is a “second digit” release and therefore more than just a collection of security tweaks or bug fixes. The WordPress development team has been listening to users, and there are many improvements which will ease the often winding path of creating WordPress-based sites.
The official announcement from WordPress is at this link, and it outlines the primary enhancements.
The new features and improvements that I personally think will benefit ZigPress projects and clients the most are:
- Easier video embeds
- Post thumbnails
- Custom post types
- Extensible registration and profiles
- Custom galleries
- Speed (many developers who tried the Release Candidate say that it’s noticeably faster than 2.8.x)
Over the next few days all ZigPress-managed WordPress sites will be upgraded.

Brilliant news – I have quite a few WP blogs, time to go get the update and start trying out the new features.
This site is now running 2.9, with no plugin or upgrade problems. And yes, it does seem a little faster. Only a little, but hey, better than being slower…
Today I am blogging all day. But I didn’t notice if 2.9 has been released until I read this post. Fortunately, you are right. I stuck in 2.8.4, just waited for 2.9 because WP was changing (upgrading) a bit faster. I was afraid to lose my blog if I upgrade to 2.8.5 etc. So, it’s worth the wait, I guess.
Can I install a different Wordpress theme to a Wordpress hosted blog?
I’ve heard that quite a few people have had problems with 2.9, so I won’t look at getting it myself. I’m happy with what I have.
I am using WordPress 2.9 for my new blog site. But yet i have not got any problem in this new version.
I can wait to try the new version since I have a pretty old version now…
WordPress 2.9 looks like it will be quite an upgrade, we have a few blogs going, will wait to see if there are an issues before we move forward.
